Remember in 2014, when Xiaomi entered India and launched the Redmi 1S at Rs. 5,999, it changed the whole smartphone market in India and became a game changer in the budget smartphone industry. Redmi 1S was Xiaomi’s first superhit, and since then they have launched over a dozen of smartphones here in India. Though they launched many smartphones in different segments, there hasn’t been a real successor to the Redmi 1S in that price segment. But on Monday, 20th March 2017, Xiaomi introduced the Redmi 4A, which can be termed as a true successor to Redmi 1S. The Redmi 4A is priced at Rs. 5,999 and is expected to dominate the budget segment with its great specifications and features and the aggressive pricing.
At the launch event in New Delhi, Xiaomi announced that Mi is the Number 1 Smartphone brand in India with respect to the online sales with 30% market share. This means that every third phone sold online is a Xiaomi phone. Also, they are the second largest smartphone brand overall in India with a market share of 10.6%. This is an incredible feat considering the amount of time Xiaomi has been in India. They also started manufacturing their smartphones in India from 2015 and have contributed to the Indian Government’s “Make in India” initiative. Xiaomi announced that they have now started manufacturing from their 2nd manufacturing plant as well. Their facility in Sri City now generates employment for more than 5000 employees, of which over 90% are women employees. With their new facility and workforce, Xiaomi claims to be producing 1 phone every second. And of all the Xiaomi phones that are sold here in India, 95% of them come from these manufacturing facilities. Xiaomi not only does make phones in India, they design them in India too. And Redmi 4A is one such product made for India.
Redmi 4A is priced at Rs.5,999 and is a smartphone targeted at the budget conscious audience. However, it does come with some great specifications. Redmi 4A come with a 5 inch HD display and is made up of a polycarbonate body, which makes it quite light at 131.5 grams. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 quad-core 64-bit processor (1.4 GHz max) which is based on A53 cores and is coupled with Adreno 308 GPU. Redmi 4A comes with 2GB RAM and an onboard storage of 16GB. This can be expanded to up to 128GB using a microSD card. However, the phone doesn’t have a dedicated microSD slot and comes with a hybrid sim slot, which means you can either use it as a Dual sim phone (micro sim + nano sim) or use a single sim (micro sim) and a microSD slot. It also has support for VoLTE network. Redmi 4A also boasts of a 3120mAh high-density battery which is 20% more than its competitors in the same segment and is expected to give a 7-days standby backup. On the camera side, it houses a 13MP rear camera that has a f/2.2 aperture and has features like HDR and real-time filters. The front facing camera is 5MP and comes with the revamped Beautify modes for those good looking selfies. Xiaomi has added the IR Blaster to the hardware which is a great feature seen in today’s mid-segment and high-end smartphones and comes very handy.
